The second series of train stamps introduces two diesel electric locomotives (2000 and 7000 series) and diesel railcars (urban commuters and Saemaul (New Town) trains).

The history of diesel locomotives in Korea goes back to the Korean War. The UN Army, which came to the rescue of the Republic of Korea, donated four SW8 (2000 series) locomotives at the time it withdrew. Those diesel locomotives, once in the hands of Koreans, were operated in tandem with steam engines in transporting both passengers and freight. It was not until 1967, however, when diesel workhorses completely replaced steam locomotives, that diesel locomotives emerged as the true backbone of transportation of both passengers and freight.

The diesel railcars, which have independent power systems, are easy to operate and have high maneuverability in passenger transportation. Because of these characteristics, they have continued to be used for short-distance operation service and as sightseeing trains. In 1986, Korean technicians succeeded in developing a new workhorse, namely, a push-pull Saemaul railcar, which met all the necessary operating requirements for performance, environmental noise standards, and riding comfort, to name a few.

On April 1, 1996, a new type of urban commuter railcar was introduced and put into operation between a number of cities and for intermediate- and short-distance trips. The new railcar is reputed to have excellent acceleration/deceleration and braking capabilities. It is also equipped with a full line of passenger conveniences, including air-conditioning and heating.
