Description
The PHILAKOREA2002 World Stamp Exhibition will be held in the exhibition halls of COEX Exhibition Center (the Pacific and the Indian Halls) for ten days starting from August 2, 2002.

The overarching theme of the third world event, following the 1984 and 1994 versions, will be Philla-World Created through Postage Stamps and Masques. The exhibition aims at introducing viewers to the indigenous sentiments and traditional cultrue of the Korean people via traditional Korean masques. The two mascots of PHILAKOREA, namely, PHILAKO (male character), and STAPHI (female character), were created based on their motifs in the traditional Korean masques. The genuine motivation of the exhibition lies in a common yearning to offer a venue where each and every participant can appreciate the integrity and values of human beings and improve the overall quality of life by creating a phila-world anchored on love, harmony, participation, and progress.

As many as over 150 countries around the world will participate in the PHILAKOREA2002 World Stamp Exhibition, claimed as yet another version of a cultural World Cup. More than 250 postage stamp sales booths will be opened while more than 3,500 frames of philatelic works will be shown. Last but not least, the 67th Congress of the Federation Internationale de Philatelie (FIP) and the Government Postage Stamp Printers' Conference (GPSPC) will be held during the exhibition.

The postage stamps to be printed in commemoration of the PHILAKOREA2002 feature the Red Queen and the Pink Lady, two rose species created by domestic floral researchers with Korea'a National Horticultural Research Institute of Rural Development Administration. The Red Queen is a species that blooms one large, splendorous red flower per stem, while the Pink Lady species blooms more than five small flowers with pink rims per stem. With roses accentuating the atmosphere, PHILAKOREA2002 is sure to offer a venue of fun-filled festivities to people from all over the world.
