Description
The traditional dye plants series will be newly introduced for a run of five years from 2002 to 2006. Carthamus tinctorius Linn, Lithospermum erythrorhizon Sieb. et Zucc., Fraxinus rhynchophylla Hance and Persicaria tinctoria H. Gross will be introduced as the first bundle of the series.

Carthamus tinctorius Linn.
Carthamus tinctorius Linn is a yearly composite plant that grows one meter tall. In July to August, reddish yellow flowers blossom. The plant, commonly known as Safflower, is used for medicinal purposes as well as dye materials. The petals of the flower are used as the dye to make a reddish color.

Lithospermum erythrorhizon Sieb. et Zucc.
Lithospermum erythororhizon Sieb. et Zucc. is a perennial plant that grows 30 to 70 centimeters high. Its white flowers blossom from May to June. It grows naturally in the grasses of mountains and fields all across Korea. The roots of the plant are used for medicinal uses as well as for making a purplish color.

Fraxinus rhynchophylla Hance.
This tall forest tree that sheds its leaves in winter is 10 m in height. When the bark of the tree is soaked in water, the water turns greenish and is thus also known as the Green Ash. This plant that buds in May grows at the foot of mountains or at the waterside in valleys. The skin of the plant is used for making grey dyes.

Persicarsi tinctoria H. Gross.
This annual grows to 50 to 60 cm in open fields. The reddish flower blooms in August. The leaves and the stalk of the plant contains blue pigments that are used for making blue dyes.
