| Description | ||||
| The 21st century will be an era of women. Based on their proven creativity and talents, women are emerging as a major force in history. In this information and knowledge-based society, full utilization of women's human resources is a critical task and an important component of national development.
Although the government of the Republic of Korea has been taking active measures to promote gender mainstreaming, women's participation still falls short in many fields, including politics, economics, society and culture. Major efforts are necessary to promote gender equality, provide maternity protection, eliminate gender discriminatory consciousness, and develop women's human resources so that women can emerge as a driving force for social development. The government of the Republic of Korea has dedicated the first week of July (July 1~7) each year as Women's Week. This event is designed to promote gender awareness and accelerate gender equality among the general public. Various promotional activities and celebrations are scheduled during the week, including a commemoration ceremony, events to publish women-related research results, and various promotional activities through the mass media. Individuals and groups are given awards for their dedication and efforts towards gender equality in Korean society. The Women's Development Act was enacted to actualize the concept of gender equality inscribed in the Constitution. Since the enforcement of the Act in July 1996, Women's Week has provided important opportunities to disseminate non-discriminatory attitudes into everyday life culture. Nation-wide activities centering on an annual theme have been organized. We are delighted to publish this commemorative postage stamp to celebrate the seventh Women's Week which promotes national interest in the development of a healthy and gender equal society. The commemorative stamp is selected entry to the 2002 International Postage Stamp Design Contest. The stamp featuring "A delicate and graceful woman" will be released to celebrate the seventh Women's Week which promotes national interest in the development of a healthy and gender equal society. |
