| Description | ||||
| UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization), a specialized agency of the UN, was established in 1945 to contribute to peace and security in the world by promoting collaboration and understanding through education, science, culture and communication. Gaining membership in UNESCO as the 55th Member State in June of 1950, the Republic of Korea founded the Korean National Commission for UNESCO on January 30th, 1954 and has since participated actively in the international march towards peace.
The year 2004 marks the 50th anniversary of the KNCU. Since its inception in 1954, the KNCU has played a crucial role in introducing the Korean people's desire for peace and the cultures and traditions of Korea to the world, while in turn working to channel the intellectual and ethical streams of international society onto a domestic level. It has been actively participating in UNESCO's activities for peace and development, and has striven to implement UNESCO's spirits and ideals in the fields of education, science, culture, communication and youth within a uniquely Korean framework. In welcoming its 50th anniversary, it is our hope that the KNCU will search for new roles and functions towards the realization of yet another 50 years of contributing to the peace and prosperity of Korea and the world, based on five decades of experience in "constructing the defences of peace in the minds of men." |
