| Description | ||||
| Founded on February 23, 1905 in Chicago, USA, the Rotary International
is an world wide voluntary organization that aims to provide humanitarian services and foster
global friendship and peace. At present, approximately 1.21 million Rotarians belong to more
than 32,000 Rotary clubs located in 166 countries.
The name "Rotary" is derived from the early practice of rotating meetings among members' offices. Under its principal motto "Service Above Self," Rotary clubs are comprised of businessmen and professionals in local communities. Rotary International has rendered a variety of services during the past century in such areas as diseases, hunger, illiteracy, education, the environment, and others. Furthermore, the Rotary has invested 600 million dollars since 1985 in the effort to eradicate polio from the world. As a result, polio is expected to be eradicated in 2005. On the occasion of its centennial, Rotary International wins respect for its past endeavors and gains high expectation for the next 100 years of enhancing human dignity and the quality of life. |
