Description
In the fourth edition of the traditional dye plants series, Clerodendron trichotomum Thunb., Gardenia jasminoides Ellis for. grandiflora Makino, Taxus cuspidata Sieb. et Zucc., and Smilax china Linn. are featured.

Clerodendron trichotomum Thunb.
This evergreen shrub grows in fertile lands in the piedmonts, valleys or coastal areas in the southern part of Hwanghae-do province. It grows to about 2 meters in height. White flowers bloom from August to September, and round-shaped fruits ripen deep blue in October. They are called Nurijangnamu in Korean, which means "rancid tree" because of the bad odor that the plant exudes. Jade green dye is obtained from its fruits.
