Description
In the fourth edition of the traditional dye plants series, Clerodendron trichotomum Thunb., Gardenia jasminoides Ellis for. grandiflora Makino, Taxus cuspidata Sieb. et Zucc., and Smilax china Linn. are featured.

Smilax china Linn.
This vine-like, deciduous shrub grows in sunny spots at the bottom of mountains that are located in the southern part of Hwanghae-do Province. It grows to about 3 meters in length. Its thick roots winds to each side, and its stem has thorns that look like hooks. Yellowish green flowers bloom from May to August and round-shaped fruits ripen in the color of red from September to October. Reddish brown dyes with a yellowish tinge are obtained from its vines.
