The 2005 APEC Economic Leader's Meeting will be held on the 18th and 19th of November, 2005 in Busan.
The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) is a regional cooperative body established in 1989 with the vision of promoting common prosperity by Asia-Pacific economies. Currently, APEC has 21 member economies. APEC accounts for approximately 58% of world GDP, and 46% of the total global trade volume, representing the largest trade partners and investment market of Korea. Also, having all four major countries surrounding the geopolitics of the Korean peninsula - US, China, Russia and Japan - as members, APEC is particularly meaningful to Korea's diplomacy and security. The theme of APEC 2005 is "Towards One Community: Meet the Challenge, Make the Change." Approximately 10,000 leaders and guests from Korea and abroad are expected to gather in Busan this November for this event which will serve as an important opportunity to enhance the image of Korea and brand value of its companies. Bearing hopes for a successful hosting of APEC 2005 Korea, two postage stamps have been issued with pictures of Nurimaru APEC House and "The Sun, the Moon and the Five Peaks". Nurimaru APEC House is located on Dongbaek Island, and its name is a pure Korean word meaning "the house for a world summit meeting" as "nuri" means world and "maru" refers to summit. "The Sun, the Moon and the Five Peaks" is a traditional picture of a green pine tree, water, five mountain peaks, the sun, and the moon. It signifies the dignity of a royal house, as it used to stand behind the King's throne. |
