The entire world is enduring the pain of soaring oil prices. Depletion
of energy resources as well as the resulting shortage has been long predicted. In spite of
countries across the world making great efforts to resolve this issue, they have not been able
to find a satisfactory replacement. The situation is even more serious for Korea because it
ranks as the world's No. 10 in energy consumption and import almost all of the fuel it
consumes. Overcoming this crisis requires more efficient energy use. In this regard, ways to
save energy that can be easily put into practice by all Korean people in their every day lives
are suggested through a new stamp.
First, just pulling out the plugs can save, over a year, the same amount of electricity used in a month. Even if the switches are off, electricity is consumed through plugs. The electricity that is wasted in this manner totals about 11% of annual household electricity consumption. Second, keep the indoor temperature at 26~28c during summer time and 18~20c during winter time. Keeping indoor temperature at an appropriate level, which in advanced countries, has been ingrained into their every-day routine, can be practiced by wearing light clothes without a necktie and using folding-fans or motor fans during summer season. During winter season, the habit of wearing long underwear should be encouraged. Third, when buying home electronics or cars, select those with high energy efficiency ratio. A home electronics product with "first grade" energy efficiency ratio can save up to 30~45% in energy costs, compared to the "fifth grade." Fourth, use public transportation instead of private cars. Either riding a bicycle or just walking, when traveling a short distance, can not only save energy but also will make us healthier. Through such small energy-saving practices in our every-day life, as replacing old fluorescent or glow lamps with LED illuminations or bulb-type fluorescent lamp, setting computers at energy-saving mode, avoiding abrupt braking or idling when driving a car, etc., we can participate in the beautiful march toward reviving not just our household economy but also the health of our environment and the earth. |
