We were all so overjoyed at the restoration of independence and came forth to join our efforts together in laying a firm foundation for the creation of a new epoch of our own. Unfortunately, however, the Republic still at the infant stage was thrown into the quagmire of distress and bitter war for a time by the unlawful and vicious North Korean puppet regime`s invasion of June 25, 1950. Despite such adversities, Korean people stood firmly and eventually repelled the Communist invasion by fighting side by side with the allies and with the strong determination to safe-guard the freedom and peace on this soil. It was this unyielding aspiration and courage of the people that have maintained the territorial integrity.

Now the government, to realize the self-sustaining economy, plunged the nation into the second five-year economy plan with encouragement gained from the successful accomplishment of the first five-year plan. On the other hand, the government dispatched combat troops to the Republic of Vietnam to help our friends defend the national security and peace on their soil, in a way of reciprocating the assistance extended to us by the allies in the past.

As we celebrate once again the restoration of independence on th occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Republic, at this time when remarkable progress is being achieved for the national prosperity the nation is called upon to resolve anew to long cherish the inspiration and joy of the day and to build a new history of Korea.

The Ministry of Communications issues a commemorative postage stamp to join with the people in celebrating the happy occasion, praying at the same time for the everlasting prosperity and early unification of the country.
