| Description | ||||

May 5 this year will mark the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the League of
Red Cross Societies. The red cross movement, based on lofty ideals of a Swiss philanthropist Jean Henry
Dunant, has been devoted to wide-range activities of social service to the human community, standing
aloof from standpoint of a nation, a race or a religious sect.
The League of Red Cross Societies, the center of this movement and an international organization, now comprises 111 national Red Cross Societies and performs liaison work for them, guides and coordinates the activities and programs of these Red Cross Societies. The Republic of Korea joined the organization on September 28, 1949 and has made steady efforts to promote the cause of the movement through international cooperation. The Red Cross is always ready to extend warm helping hands to victims of diseases, poverty and illiteracy, to natual disaster-stricken people wandering in the street as well as to wounded soldiers dying on the battlefield. The Ministry of Communications issues a commemorative postage stamp of the anniversary, hoping that it will help acquaint the people more with the loftly red cross goals and will help build a more serene society in this country. |
