The Seoul-Pusan expressway is a trunk car road of the nation which links the two
large economic zones of the Han River and the Naktong River basins and connect five major cities of the
nation including Seoul, the capital city of Korea.
The construction of the expressway was undertaken on February 1, 1968 by our technicians as a project of the Second Five year Economic Plan. The 22.4m wide and four-lane road extends 428km in length, allows 80-120km speed per hour and by which the distance between Seoul and Pusan would be covered in approximately five hours. The expressway which cost a total of 42.97 billion Won in Korean currency will be finally opened to traffic on June 30, 1970. The construction has proceeded under the four divided sections; Seoul-Osan, Osan-Daejon, Daejon-Taegu and Taegu-Pusan. The last section Daejon-Taegu has been encountered with many techically difficult works and all course will be over upon completion of the last section. There will be built 18 inter-changes, 29 bridges(longer than 100 meters) and six tunnels. The Ministry of Communications issues a commemorative postage stamp in celebration of the official opening of the expressway which symbolizes the achievements of the modernization of the nation. |
