Description
When the north Korean Communist aggressors launched their infamous invasion of the Republic of Korea on June 25, 1950, woman leaders of this country courageously rose up with a burinng spirit of patriotism. In response totheir ardent demand that opportunities be given the nation's women to fight the Communist invaders with guns, the then president Syngman Rhee approved the founding of the Women's Volunteer Army in the war-time capital of Pusan on September 6 the same year.

Since its founding, the Women`s Army Corps has contributed a great deal to the sacred task of national defense, both in time of war and peace, with constant training, education and military techniques. Members of the WAC are performing their duties beautifully, with a high pride and patriotism, for the prosperity of their fatherland and fellow countrymen. With wisdom, courage and beauty as their motto, the WACs are devoted to the implementation of such tasks, among others, as to: (1) Replenish personnel resources in the rear area for the purpose of national defense (2) Help maintain as much ample military personnel strength as possible in the frontline areas through the establishment of a rear-area service system; and (3) Render positive assistance to the performance of general military service work in such fields as administration, typewriting, communication exchanges, broadcasting to the enemy and paratrooping.

Especially, during the Korean War, members of the Women`s Army Corps worked not only at major command Posts in the rear area but also advanced to command headquarters of various divisions in the foremost frontline areas. Some of them were engaged in troop information and education at hospitals, while others interrogated Communist prisoners of war in Mt. Chiri command post.

The Ministry of Communications is to issue, on the occasion of observing the 20th anniversary of the founding of the WAC, a commemorative postage stamp in admiration and celebration of the brilliant record of accomplishment made by the WAC. The WACs, indeed have made a great contribution to the enhancement of the spirit of national defense among the entire of people Korea, at the same time having played an important role in the strengthening of our national defense capabilities.
