The Hangul Hakhoe (Korean Language Research Society) is now preparing various
programs to commemorate the 50th anniversary of its founding, which falls on December 3, 1971.
The language and letters of us, the Korean people, are the very soul of our people, without which we can hardly live on even for a single day. The Korean Language Research Sociey has successfully overcome various difficulties and hardships, and even humiliations, during the past several decades while Korea was placed under the rule of Japanese imperialists. Successfully tiding over innumerable cases of persecution, the Society has laboriously exerted itself to purify, foster and improve Hangul, the Korean alphabet which is one of the dearest cultural heritages of our people, so that everyone of us can continue to use it as valuably and efficiently as possible. The thorny path which the Hangul Hakhoe has come through is exactly the history of our people's persistent struggle against persecution and national crises. In order to bring about uniformity in the method of spelling Korean words, which was quite confusing to the people in general, the Society first published the "Unified Principle of Spelling Foreign-Originating Words" were published in succession by the Society which has been spearheading the movement for the exclusive use of Hangul among the people. In addition, the Society has published four kinds of Korean dictionaries: Kun Sajon (Big Dictionary); Chung Sajon (Middle Dictionary); So Sajon (Small Dictionary) and Sae Hangul Sajon (New Korean Dictionary). The Society also published in 1966 books on the names of localities in Seoul, Chungchong-do and Kangwon-do provinces. While working on revision of the Bic Dictionary, the Society has continued to date to expand its academic activities through the establishment of various subsidiary organizations devoted to the study and research of the Korean language. On the occasion of observing the 50th anniversary of the Korean Language Research Society, the Ministry of Communications is to release a postage stamp in honor of the great accomplishment made by the Society, at the same time praying for the continued development and growth of the Society. |
