Description
January 31, 1972 marks the 20th anniversary of the Republic of Korea`s entry into the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

ITU, one of the oldest international organizations, was founded on May 17, 1865 originally as the International Telegraph Union. Now serving as one of the United Nations specialized agencies, ITU has its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, and is affiliated by 140 member countries.

Telecommunication, the most advanced means of communication ever invented by man, not only plays an important role in our economic, social, cultural and national defense activities. Chief aims of ITU include: (1) Promotion of international cooperation to ensure effective telecommunication services and improve telecommunication systems. (2) Encouragement of wider use of telecommunication by the general public and enhancement of utility and efficiency of telecommunication through improvement of technique, facilities and operation. (3) Regulation and coordination of telecommunication activities among the member countries to help achieve these ITU objectives.

Korea, which began its telegraph services in 1885, was unable to make any substantial progress in the development of telecommunication during the ensuring six decades. But the nations liberation in 1945 brought a turning point. Since then, the nation has taken a vast stride toward modernization of its communication systems. Among the most salient achievements are the introduction of a micro-wave system and the installation of an earth station for satellite communications.

Korea, in active international cooperation through ITU, has been also making a great contribution to the betterment of international telecommunication services.

To emphasize the significance of the 20th anniversary of the Republic of Korea's entry into ITU and signify its hope that ITU will further contribute to the promotion of the welfare of mankind and the reservation of world peace, the Ministry of Communications is issuing this commemorative stamp.
