The Ministry of Communications is issuing these two stamps as the second part of a
series of postage stamps featuring Korean's major national parks to give them broader publicity at home
and abroad. The first two stamps of the series were issued on May 30, 1972. The new stamps depict the
following two parks.
2. Mt. Sokri National Park (Designated on March 24, 1970. Area : 105 sq km): This park consists of a branch of the Sobaek Mountains, whose spectacular peaks, including 1,057m - high Cohnhwang Peak, offers a magnificent scenery. In the park is the Bopju-sa Temple, which was built by Uishinchosa, a noted Buddhist priest, in the 14th year of King Chin-hung of the Silla Dynasty (553 A.D.). The temple abounds in masterpieces of Silla arts such as the Palsang Hall and the Ssangsaja Stone Lantern. These, together with the Sokyon Pond, are officially designated as national treasures. Along with the Kyongju National Park, this park present a year-round attraction for domestic and foreign tourists. Especially famous is the beauty of its red-tinged autumn foliage. |
