The Ministry of Communications is issuing these stamps as the fourth part of a
series introducing the nation's renowned scenic sights.
1. Namhae Suspension Bridge: One of the longest suspension bridge in Asia, this 660-meter-long, 12-meter-wide bridge spans a narrow ocean strait between the peninsula and Namhae Island off the southern coast of Cholla Namdo. On the peninsula side of the bridge is Kumnam-myon, Hadong-gun, and on its island side is Noryang, Solchon-myon, Namhae-gun. The bridge, the nation`s first such structure, was dedicated on June 22, 1973 nearly five years after the construction work began. It stands 25 meters above the water. Its towers soar 60 meters tall. Built in the area called Hallyo Sudo meaning the Hansan-Yosu Waterway, which is famous for Adm. Yi Sun-shin's victorious sea battle against an invading Japanese armada in the 16th century, the bridge has become a new tourist attraction. |
