The Ministry of Communications is issuing these stamps as the fourth part of a
series introducing the nation's renowned scenic sights.
2. Hongdo Island: This island, situated 116 kilometers away from Mokpo, Cholla Namdo, and 23 kilometers off Daeheuksan Island, has been designated by the government as Natural Asset No. 170. Inhabited by some 170 families, it belongs to Heuksan-myon, Shinan-gun, Cholla Namdo. The island is famous for its fantastic rock formations, abundant trees and plants of various species and magnificent seascape. Among the reddish brown rock formations are the Mujikae (Rainbow) Gate, the Kidung (Pillar) Rock, the Dom Rock and the Tot (Sail) Rock. There are also many water gates and natural caves. The island is rich in orchids, camellias, pine-nut trees, Japanese aucubas and chestnut trees. The sea around the island abounds in colorful seaweeds, fish of various kinds, conches, abalones and sea slugs, which all make the area a spectacular natural aquarium. |
