Description
Ministry of Communications has a plan to issue 10 won regular stamps in a series of three new designs. The first stamp of the series depicts birds of white cranes with a red crest.

Belonging to Grus japonensis family, it is designated as a natural memorial animal No. 202. It has 62~66cm wide wings and 15~17cm long bill. It has almost pure white body with a red crest on the head. Its head is black and long neck is dark slate with a slanting black band. The bill is olive and legs are slate grey.

The crane lays two pale yellowish brown eggs in June. It used to inhabit on the lake and stream side and plain. It lives on insects, mudfish and parsley. The average span of the bird's life is 40~50 years. Its breeding area is east and north China and it spends winter at Korea, China and Japan. The white crane is indigenous to east Asia and protected as a natural memorial bird.
