| Description | ||||

The Korean National Commission for the U.N. Educational, Socientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)
has come of age as it marked its 20th anniversary this year.
The Korean commission for UNESCO was inaugurated on January 30, 1954, about four years after the Republic of Korea was admitted into UNESCO as the 55th member state at the Fifth General Conference of UNESCO held in Florence, Italy, on June 14, 1950. UNESCO, a specialized agency of the United Nations, has been promoting world peace and the welfare of mankind through educational, scientific, cultural and mass communication activities in and among its member nations. During the past two decades, the Korean commission for UNESCO, in cooperation with UNESCO, has assisted in the establishment of such educational and scientific institutions in Korea as the National Textbook Printing Plant, built at Yongdeungpo, Seoul, and the Fine Instrument Center (FIC). It also conducted various research and survey programs, sponsored seminars and exchange of persons, and circulated publications in the educational, scientific and cultural fields, thereby acting as a bridge between Korea and other nations of the world, while contributing greatly to the educational, scientific and cultural development in Korea. Paying a high tribute to the remarkable achievements of the Korean commission for UNESCO and in the hope of letting them known widely at home and abroad, the Ministry of Communications is issuing this commemorateve stamp. |
