| Description | ||||
| Chestnut: This nut grows on a tree belonging to the beech family. The tree which has deciduous leaves stands five to 15 meters high. Its white blossoms, each having both pistillate and staminate flowers, come into bloom in May to June. The flowers have strong fragrance which is quite unique. Each prickly bur contains two or three smooth-shelled nuts. The green burs turn yellowish brown and shed the nuts as they ripen in September to October. The wood of this tree has many uses while the nut is edible and also used as a medicine. The trees, grown in the mountains or in the vicinity of rural villages, are widely distributed in Korea, Hokkaido and other parts of Japan. | ||||
