Description
The Ministry of Communications is issuing these two Postage Stamps, depicting the Iris family, as the 3rd Issue of the Flower Series.

1. Iris
The iris is found easily at the foot of any mountain in Korea. It is 60 to 80cm in height, with its stem being cylindric. Large flowers of deep celadon, with sword-shaped leaves bloom sometime in May through June. There is no distinct difference between three upright petals and three petal-like sepals. The flower is very much like a sweet flag and an orchid, all of which are widely disseminated everywhere in Asia. As its flowers are very beautiful and its plant can grow well anywhere, the iris is cultivated all over Korea.

2.Thistle:
The thistle, a perennial plant belonging to the Compostitae family is easily found in the mountains and flat lands of our country. Also called "Ong-goshi" or "Han-gang-kwi", its reddish purple flowers are seated on a pitted and hairy receptacle, presenting the figure of a brush cleaning a cauldron. Its spiny leaves turn into stings at the end. Its plant is 50 to 100cm in height, while its root is widely used as a herb tonic; young leaves and stems are also edible as vegetables. As the plant grows well anywhere, with pretty flowers, the thistle may well be recommended for gardening and admiration.
