| Description | ||||
| The second World Taikwondo Championships are to be held in Seoul from August 25 through September 1, 1975, with a large number of Taikwondo athletes from many countries of the World competing with one another in strength and skill.
Tai-kwon-do, a martial art peculiar to Korea, dates from the period of Kokuryo(olden Korea) some 3000 year ago. Later during the period of Silla, Taikwondo was adopted by our ancestors demonstrating the strong and gallant aspects of our National culture. Today, Taikwondo is contributing a great deal to the development of World culture as it has grown to become a World sport. With the establishment of the Korean Taikwondo Association on September 16,1961, Taikwondo was officially adopted as a sport game to be played at the 43rd National Athletic Meet in 1962. On November 30, 1972, Kook-ki-won(National Martial Arts Gymnasium) was erected as a kind of the center for World Taikwondo. Championships were held at Kookkiwon from March 25 through 27, 1973. On the following day, March 28 the same year, the World Taikwondo League was inaugurated by the participants in the Championships, successfully renewing the image of Taikwondo to the entire World. In the hope that Taikwondo, the National martial art of Korea, will be spread widely throughout the World, thereby helping enhance the National dignity and pride of our people, the Ministry of Communications is issuing this commemorative Postage Stamp. |
