Description
The Ministry of Communications has chosen camellia and gentian as the themes for the fifth of a series of postage stamps depicting flowers grown in Korea.

1. Camellia:
An evergreen plant belonging to the aromatic tree family, camellia is found in the southern part of Korea, China and Japan. Its flowers, usually red or purple but very rarely white, bloom in wintertime. Horticulturists grow the plant for enjoyment as the flowers are very pretty. The flowers contain much honey, inviting many kinds of birds to come around. Since olden times, the oil produced from camellia fruits has been loved by women for cleansing hairs. Camellia oil is also used for industrial purposes or as a medicine nowadays.

2. Gentian:
Gentian, a perennial plant the flowers of which bloom in autumn in purple and light purple colors, grows in Korea and China. Its flowers are funnel-shaped, resembling a bell. They are split apart into five portions. The roots look like beards and taste very bitter. Herb doctors use them as a peptic or a diuretic. As the medicine proves so effective, it is said, people began to call it "Yongdam (the gall of a dragon)".
