| Description | ||||
| The 16th of February,1977, marks the 50th anniversary of the birth of broadcasting in Korea.
The broadcast media are one of the greatest benefits civilization has ever endeared to mankind. They simultaneously bring news, enlightenment and entertainment to people in widely scattered areas. The first broadcasting service in the country was initiated on February 16, 1927, under the call sign JODK. From that time broadcasting service in Korea has made steady progress, and by 1937 a national radio netwark link in Pyong-yang, Pusan, Taegu, Kwangju, Iri and Chongjin had been developed. Eight local stations as well as the key station in Seoul were totally destroyed during the Korean War. In 1961 a television broadcasting station was founded. This achievement was soon followed by the birth of commercial stations--CBS, KBS, TBC and MBC. The inception of these networks heralded the dawn of an era for commercial broadasting. The 1970s' saw the sphere of broadcasting service transcending the national boundaries. To enble everseas listeners to keep abreast of the volatile international situation, our expanded mission included the sinificant role of introducing to the world the reality of our position as well as our history and culture. In addition, our overseas service began to conter in a positive manner the propagada offensive for North Korea. In 1973, KBS commenced a new period as a pubic corporation with the aim of enhancing the pubic quality of broadcasting and increasing the effectiveness of broadcastng service. With the proud and successful history of broadcasting in our country, we now look forward to a future of ever lasting prosperity and development. This postage stamp is issued by the Minstry of Communications in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of broadcasting in Korea as well as in celebration of KBS's inauguration of the recently completed Broadcasting Center on Yoido.,/B> |
