| Description | ||||
| Another chapter was added to the world history of mountain-climbing at 12:50 local time(16:50 Korean Standard Time), September 15,1977, as Ko Sang-don, a young Korean alpinist who belonged to the second attack party of the Korean everest expedition-led by Kim Young-do, hoisted the Taegukki, the national flag of the Republic of Korea, on the top of the 8848-meter Mt. Everest.
Mt. Everset is the highest in the Himalayas known as the roof of the World. The Korea alpinists thus became the 12th team to conquer the World's tallest peak, the 8th team by nationality and the 4th team to climb up to the top in post-monsooon season. Mt. Everest is situated in the east of Nepal, bordering on Tibet. As many as 14 peaks higher than 8000 meters, and more than 350 peaks topping 7000 meters stand domineeringly in the Himalayas. It indeed embraces the great and mysterious power of Nature, and ranges of glaciers have been laid all along the climbing course since time immemorial. In honor of the gallant conquest of Mt. Everest by the members of the 1977 Korea Everest Expedition, through overcoming a countless number of difficulties and hardships, the Ministry of Communications issues a commemorative postage stamp, at the same time hoping that all the people of Korea will continue to make strenuous efforts in every walk of life with such patience as the Korean alpinists have so successfully displayed. |
