Description
An exhibition of 354 artistic masterpieces representing "5000 years of Korean art" is to be held in seven major cities of the United States from May 1 this year through the end of June 1981. In commemorations of this significant event, the Ministry of Communications is issuing a total of 30 kinds of special postage stamps on six occasions during the exhibition period - 5 kinds of stamps each time - in order to give a fresh image of Korea with abundant cultural inheritance, at the same time showing iff the excellent quality of our traditional culture to the entire world. Degigns to be used as the themes of those special stamps are to be selected from among the entires to the overseas exhibition.

The five following art works have been chosen as the themes for the first of the series:
4. Celadon Maebyong Vase with Inlaid Cloud and Crane Design.
National Treasure No. 68, this Maebyong vase, believed to have been made during the Koryo Dynasty (mid-12th century), is 42.1cm high and 24.5cm in body diameter. Now preserved at Kansong Museum of Fine Arts, this case is the best example of Koryo celadon vase at its apex, having a broad shoulder, small mouth and slender waist. Beneath the mouth is a white inlaid band of figures, and above the foot is a band of lotus flower petals in black and white inlay. On the body are six alternate rows of circles, each circle enclosing a crane and clouds in black and white inlay. The cranes in the circles are flying upward, while those outside the circles are flying downward. A glossy grayish-green glaze with rough crackles covers the whole body evenly.
