Description
President and Mrs. Leopold Sedar Senghor of the Republic of Senegal are coming to the Republic of Korea on a four day official visit from April 22 through 25, 1979, at the invitation of President PARK Chung Hee.

The Republic of Senegal, which lies on the west coast of Africa, bounded by Mauritania, Mali and Guinea, attained independence on August 20, 1960. Senegal has about 5.5 million population, and is 196,192sq.km. in area. A large portion of its population is engaged in agriculture, which is dominated by the production and processing of groundnuts. Fishing industry is expanding rapidly, and phosphates are mined on large scale. Other industries are also well developed in textiles, chemicals, building materials, etc.

Senegal is a moderate, neutral country, and has been playing an important role in the Non-aligned Movement. The Republic of Korea has been in formal displomatic ties with Senegal, since 1962, whereas North Korea opened displomatic relations in 1972.

This first state visit of President Senghor since the estabishment of diplomatic ties between the two Republics has significant meaning in consolidating and stengthening the existing friendly and cooperative relations between our two countries.

Welcoming whole-heartedly the visit of President and First Lady Senghor to Korea, the Ministry of Comunications issues this commemorative stamp.
