Description
Since the 1st World Basketball Championship for Women was held in the Chilean capital of Santiago in 1953, the event has been held once every four years in various countries of the world on a rotation basis. It was unanimously decided at an executive board meeting of the International Amateur Basketball Federation in July, 1974, that the 8th World Women Championship be held in Seoul, Korea. And the duration was subsequently fixed at April 29 through May 13 in 1979.

This will be the first World Womens' Championship to be held in Asia, providing Korea with an opportunity of sponsoring the first official basketball championship on an international scale unprecedented in the history of basketball in Korea. A total of 13 teams representing various regions of the entire world are expected to take part in the event which is indeed one of the most prestigious amateur basketball championships on the globe. Thus, the occasion will contribute a great deal, not only to the development of women sports in various countries, but also to the enhancement of the image of a rapidly advancing Korea to all the countires of the international community.

In the hope that the forthcoming sport event will greatly accelerate further progress and improvement in the technical skills of the Korean sports circles, as a whole, as well as the basketball game, the Ministry of Communications is issuing this commemorative postage stamp.
