For the past 10 years, all the people of Korea have firmly laid the foundation of modernization of our country by making Saemaul Undong the motivating power of national development in rural and urban areas, in the factories and the offices, at homes and at schools. Since the start of the campaign a total of 1,100 million people have participated in a total of 12 million Saemaul-sponsored projects of various kinds that have cost 2,752.1 billion won in working expenses.

By staging this campaign with its spirit of diligence, self-help and cooperation, we have come near realizing our aspiration for building up a country of culture and welfare. The campaign played the central role in our achieving the first-stage target of raising the GNP above $1,642, the exports to $15 billion, the rice production to 40 million sok, etc.

In the 1980's, we should not only continue, but accelerate this movement without being satisfied with the results that have been achieved. If we push Saemaul Undong as an autonomous national movement through this decade, with the determination to create a new country, it will not be long before we find ourselves among the highly industrialized and cultured nations of the world.
