Description
Folk paintings are part of folk art in which the aesthetic consciousness and sentiment and emotion of a people are visually expressed.

The Ministry of Communications has selected nine out of the many Korean folk paintings in order to issue them as postage stamps. This is to help understand, from the aesthetic side, the popular emotion that has been long dominant in the Korean hearts. By this, the Ministry of Communications also hopis to bring people both at home and abroad in contact with our cultural and artistic uniqueness.

The selections will be issued in series, and the following two are the second series:
1. Red Phoenix.
The Red Phoenix, realized in the form of a rooster, is one of the four "Guardian Deities" that are said to guard the four sides-east, west, south and north-of a sacred place such as a royal tomb or palace. The Red Phoenix is the deity that is in charge of the southern side. The other of the deities are Blue Dragon, White Tiger and Turtle, in charge of the eastern, western and northern sides respectively. The belief in these gods is derived from an old Chinese religion, Taoism.

2. Sun and Moon Over Mt. Konryun.
This picture, painted on the folding screen that was placed in back of the throne, depicts sun, moon, mountain, sea and pine tree, the elements that combined to symbolize the grandeur and eternity of Nature. The mountain in it is the legendary mountain in China called Mt. Konryun that rises high up to heaven. The picture was, thus, of great value in adding to the majesty of the kings sitting in front of it. With a simple composition and a beautiful combination of colors, the picture is considered to represent the purity of Korean folk painting.
