Description
October 27, 1980 marks the 75th anniversary of the founding of the Republic of Korea National Red Cross (ROKNRC).

The ROKNRC, established by an Imperial decree, on October 27, 1905, started out as the first humanitarian organization in Korea to engage in social welfare activities. On October 27, 1949, the ROKNRC was reorganized into a system that enabled it not only to conduct all kinds of humanitarian services such as calamity relief, medical and health care, social work, but to stage Red Cross Campaigns for youths and carry out international activities.

In 1955, the ROKNRC won recognition from the International Committee of the Red Cross, and joined the League of Red Cross Societies, becoming one of its 126 members. In the 1960's the ROKNRC spread its calamity-relief and medical care services throughout the country, helping a large number of calamity victims and providing medical and health care for the poor.

During the last decade, it worked with enthusiasm for, among other things, the reunion of the 10 million separated family members now living apart in South and North Korea. Unfortunately, however, this genuine effort of the ROKNRC has yet to bear fruit.

On this occasion of the 75th anniversary of the founding of the ROKNRC, the Ministry of Communications issues this commemorative stamp as a sign of recognition of its past services and also as a way of promotion of its cause of humanitarianism and world peace.
