Description
The Ministry of Communications has selected eight documentary paintings depicting some of the great victories our avcestors won, and decided to issue them as postage stamps, intending them to serve to make known throughout the wisdom with which our ancestors overcame our national difficulties and also to help remind the people at home of the historical lessons to be learned from those national tragedies. The stamps are printed in a combination of six different colors. the first ever attempted in our country.

The following two stamps are the first of the series:
1. Territorial Expansion by Kwanggaeto the Great.
Painted in 1975 by Lee Chong-sang, Professor of art at Seoul National Unversity, this picture depicts the scene of Kwanggaeto the Great(375-413), leading his forces across the Yoha into Sukkoon Province of Yun. Kwanggaeto the Great, the 19th king of Koguryo. who used Youngrak ("ever-lasting pleasure") as the name of his kingdom's chronological era, extended his small territory in all directions and turned it into a large area ranging to Manchuria and Siberia to the morth and the Han River to the south.

2. General Euljimunduck's Great Victory at Salsoo.
Painted in 1975 by Artist Park Kak-soon, it depicts the scene of General Euljimunduck of Su, fleeing away across a river. In 612, Yangjae, King of su, invaded Koguru with a great army of two million, but only saw his army fall prey to General Euljimunduck's tactical operation. Yangjae returned home with 2,700 of his army following him alive.
