Description
The year 1984 marks the centennial of KOREAN postal administration. In commemoration of this occasion, the International Philatelic Exhibition, PHILAKOREA 84 is held Seoul from October 22 through 31, 1984.

The Ministry of Communications has, therefore, decided to issue a series of postage stamps designed to show the past and present states of the Korean postal service. The series stamps will be issued in five installments, ending next year. The following two are the first of the series:

1. General Bureau of Postal Administration Building.
This building, designated as Historical Site No. 213, is located at Kyeonji-dong, Chongro-ku, Seoul. In 1884 (the 21st year of King Kojong's reign), the General Bureau of Postal Administration was created, with Hong Young-shik as its first director general, and thus the postal service was established for the first time in Korea. This building was used as the office of the new Government bureau. The age-old building is now preserved as the Communications Memorial, where antiquated postage stamps are on display along with other historical communications materials, and where commemorative stamps that have been issued in our country are sold to its visitors.

2. Seoul Central Post Office Building.
Seoul Central Post Office is located at 1st-ka, Chunbmuro. The original building, built in 1915, burned down during the Korean war, and a new building was put up at the site in 1957. Years later, however, it proved to be too small to deal with the rapidly increasing postal materials. The present building, constructed in 1978, is thus the third one that has been built.
