| Description | ||||
| November 6, 1983 marks the 30th anniversary of the Korean National Tuberculosis Associstion, the well-known civic organization established to control tuberculosis in Korea.
Established at the time when the disease was still prevalent but the government was unable to fight a nation-wide battle against it, the KNTA made a great contribution toward controlling it by staging various anti-tuberculosis programs, such as enlightening the public on the disease, finding and treating its sufferers and training workers for the programs. Since the late 1960's, when the government began its anti-tuberculosis work on a large-scale, the organization has been working in close cooperation with the government. All these programs have combined to lower the percentage of the infected people to a considerable degree, but figures still indicate that the situation is not completely satisfactory. Moreover, the present tendency for people to pay less attention to tuberculosis, probably because newer and better drugs are constantly being developed and manupactured, is to be deplored. It is a tendency to be reversed, for it may bring about an increase of the number of tuberculosis patients. The Ministry of Communications issues this commemorative postage stamp in recognition of the good health service the Korean National Tuberculosis Association has rendered to the nation for the past 30 years, and also in hopes of arousing afresh the national attention to the potentially serious health problem of tuberculosis. |
