| Description | ||||
| His Holiness Pope John Paul II, the spiritual leader of the 800 million Catholics of the world, makes a state visit to Korea May 3-7, 1984, at the joint invitation of President Chun Doo Hwan and the Committee of Bishops of Korea.
Pope John Paul II, a Polander who was elected to the papacy in October 16, 1978, has since made more than thirty trips abroad, preaching peace, love and reconciliation. What is special about this particular visit is that he will himself preside over two memorable events for the Korean Catholic Church-the commemorative function for the Bicentennial Anniversary Year of the Korean Catholic Church and the canonization of 103 Korean martyrs. The visit is expected to not only to be an apostolic mission for the propagation of love and peace in our divided peninsula, but also to be an important occasion for the strengthening of the existing friendly relations between the Holy See and our country. The Ministry of Communications issues these commemorative stamps in recognition of the significance of His Holiness Pope John Paul II's visit to our country and also as a sign of the hearty welcome our nation extends to him. |
