Description
Daily social life of our ancestors is the foundation of our culture today. We must therefore look into the aspects of life of their days throuth our traditional customs that are fading away, in order to trace the origins of our present life styles and thus understand our tradition correctly. The Ministry of Communications will issue a series of postage stamps for the next few tears with traditional "Folkways" as the theme. The two following stamps are the first of the series.

1. Pounding rice in a mortar.
In the early morning of New Year's Day, a traditional rite called "charae" is observed by the family. A family ceremony in which a table-full of food is served to the spirits of its ancestors. After the ceremony, the family elders receive traditional bows from the young members as a New Year's Day rite. The feast and the food is called "saechan". One inevitable item of "saechan" is white rice cake, which is made by first pounding rice in a mortar into power, next mixing it with water into paste and then steaming it in a steamer called "siru", and finally pounding it on a rice-cake board with a wooden mallet.

2. Welcoming the first full moon of year.
The 15th day of the first lunar month, a special day of year called "borum", is a day for the moon. The main festival function of this day, is welcoming the first full moon of the year, a rite called "dalmaji". In the dusk of evening, people go up to the hilltops or out to the fields, with a torch in their hand, to wait for the full moon to rise up. Our ancestors made their wishes when the moon rose or observed a special village rite on the mountain top to pray for a good harvest.
