Description
WWF (World Wide Fund For Nature) that works for the preservarion of the wild animals now becoming extinct, urges that all the nations of the world issue postage stamps campaigning for wildlife preservation. In full agreement with WWF, the Ministry of Communications issues this special postage stamp depicting the White-naped Crane, which is one of the birds becoming rarer and rarer in our country.

The White-naped Crane, a winter bird about 130cm long, breeds on wet ground near mountain streams or marshland as well as on plain ground. The bird feeding mainly on the roots and stalks of plants and grains, scatters throughout a large area during its breeding period, but migrates or passes the winter in flocks. From the midstream area of the Amur River, which is belived to be its breeding place, the bird flies down for the winter to the southern part of Korea, the downstream area of the Yangtze River of China, and Kangoshima of Japan.

This postage stamp carries our sincere hope that all mankind will realize that nature is the very foundation of human life and exert all human wisdom to preserve it.
