| Description | ||||
| As we are born of nature, live in it, and return to it, human life is impossible outside it. Nevertheless, today's explosive increase of human population and rapid industrialization of the world are bringing about not only a great drain of the natural resources, but also an extreme situation in which the air, the water, the soil, and even the seas, are becoming polluted to such an extent as to endager the ecosystem itself.
The seriousness of environmental polution brought many nations together in the common realization of the urgency of the problem, and in the agreement that it should be dealt with in international cooperation. As a result, the UN Declaration of Human Environment was adopted in 1972 by the UN Conference on Human Environment, and in the same year the UN General Assembly designated June 5, the opening day of the Conference, as World Environment Day, recommending that the nations of the world hold appropriate public functions, together with UN organization designed to awaken the public to the setiousness of environmental pollution. The Ministry of Communications issues this postage stamp in commemoration of "World Environment Day", a special occation which will greatly contribute to stimulating us to make a new resolution to protect our environment and keep it clean and blue. |
