| Description | ||||
| This year marks the bicentennial of the French Revolution, which began on July 14, 1789 with the citizens of Paris seizing the Bastille, spread out throughout France and ended in a victory over the absolute monarchy of the times.
The fruit of the Revolution materialized in the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen which confirmed that national sovereignty rests with the people and that freedom and security belong to the sacred and inviolable birthright of man. It was thus by the power of the common French citizens, that the basic frame was established of today's free democracy and capitalism, whose fundamental principles, freedom, equality and humanity, were made universal political values of mankind by the Revolution. On this occasion of the bicentennial of the historic French Revolution, the Ministry of Communications issues this commemorative postage stamp in recognition of the invaluable contribution it has made on the political thinking of the world. |
