| Description | ||||
| This year marks the 40th anniversary of the establishment of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), a UN organization that works to promote the economical and social development of developing countries by providing them with technical assistance.
The United Nations' technical assistance of developing countries had been divided between the United Nations Special Fund (UNSF), the United Nations Expanded Programme of Technical Assistance (UNEPTA), and individual assistance programs executed by the UN itself, until UNDP was established, absorbing the separate programs in order to increase the efficiency of the operations. Among the activities of UNDP are such long-term large scale undertakings as the inspection of the appropriateness of development plans and the establishment and management of research institutes for developing countries. If requested by a developing country, it also dispatches specialists, provides materials and equipment, or participates jointly in the development of particular regions. Korea concluded an agreement with UNSF in 1961 and another one with UNDP in 1978, and the relationship between UNDP and our country is based on this agrement. The Ministry of Communications issues this postage stamp in commemoration of the 40th anniversary of UNDP, which represents part of the United Nations' work for the welfare of mankind. |
