Description
The United Nations (UN) has been an important international organization since its inception in 1945, maintaining world peace and security as well as promoting cooperation among countries in various fields, such as economy, society, education, culture, etc. Its significance has increased even more during the process of establishing new international order, for instance, reconciliation and harmony between the east and the west.

The government of the Republic of Korea was established in 1948 by general election according to UN Resolution. Consequently, the General Assembly of UN recognized this government as the sole legitinate entity in the Korean penninsula. Moreover, we should not forget the fact that UN dispatched its troops during the 3-year Korean War, which broke out in 1950. Also, UN assisted Korea to rebuild the nation from the ruins of the war. As such, the Republic of Korea has maintained a special relationship with the UN. By formally becoming a UN member, Korea will be able to raise its international status and contribute more to international peace and properity.

Since both the north and south are joining the UN together, the international environment will more conducive to the easing of tension and the keeping of peace on the Korean peninsula. It will also promote exchange and cooperation which in turn will increase mutual understanding between the two Koreas.

With the hope that UN membership will ultimately work toward advancement of a peaceful reunification of Korea, the Ministry of Communications issues this postage stamp.
