Description
Since 1989 the Ministry of Communications has been issuing two kinds of campaign postage stamps each year. These stamps are designed to rally public support and also to educate the public in important social issues. This time, the Ministry has chosen the theme of "reducing garbage" to join the efforts to revive the earths environment which is being seriously destroyed everyday.

In an age of mass production and mass consumption, the propensity towards modern conveniences and luxury has fueled an explosion of disposable products, excessive wrapping, non-biodegradable vinyl and platic containers and batteries which are detrimental to our ecosystem. Therefore the problem of garbage poses a threat to the very existence of mankind. In an effort to reduce garbage, our government has actively promoted campaigns to collect garbage separately, reduce the volume of trash, reuse resources and develop garbage treatment technologies. And concerted international efforts to reinforce restrictions against environmental pollutions, save resources and reduce garbage continue through such programs for environmental protection as the "Montreal Accord" and the "Second World Conference on the Environment" in Rio.

Asking the world to "Save the Earth", the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) has also launched the "Clean Up the World" campaign and designated Sept. 17th-19th, 1993 as the day to rid the world of garbage.

To keep Korea beautiful and to protect the earth, the Ministry of Communications issues a postage stamp designed to discourage the use of disposable cups. Through these stamps, the Ministry hopes to change the public perception about careless littering and to raise the public awareness of working together to keep our environment clean.
