| Description | ||||
| Reduction of forest lands and environmental contamination caused by rapid industrialization and urbanization, has been endangering the inhabitation of wildlife. Living things for resources and foods which were imported in 1960s and 1970s, have disturbed the balance of the local ecological system. Worse yet, some species of widllife are in a serious crisis of extermination due to illegal captures and collections. In this situation, protection of wildllife has emerged as an important issue the entire nation should pay much attention to.
Various plan, including "Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora", and "Covention on Biological Diversity", have been adopted and promoted for the protection of wildlife. Riding on these trends, our government established "The National Environmental Preservation Act" in 1991 in order to maintain the balance of the ecological system. Therefore it designated and has been protecting 179 rare species of wildlife indigenous to Korea. Hoping that these rare species of wildlife will be safely preserved for future generations as biological resources, the Ministry of Communications, under the issuance sdhedule of "species of wildlife", issues two kinds of postage stamps featuring "A giant purple butterfly", and "A horned beetle". |
