| Description | ||||
| The War Memorial, comprising 82,500§³ of exhibiting space on a total of 116,600§³ of land, will open in Yongsan, Seoul, on June 10,1994. This large scale museum is the fruits of a national effort to organize and preserve Korean war history at this age when the number of people who directly experienced the war are gradully decreasing.
Throughout its history, due to the geopolical traits, the Korean peninsula continuously faced external aggressions, and even experienced the tragedy of the Korean War in 1950. Despite these military, political and even strong cultural threats, Korea, during its 5,000 year old historty, has been able to digest foreign culture in its own way, and has kept its unique culture. The War Memorial can be divided into two parts: the indoor exhibition area and the open space exhibition area. In this indoor exhibit area, miltary artifacts and data from the past through the present times are exhibited. In the open-space exhibit area, large miltary equipment from around the world are exhibited, as well as the mounmental stone of King Kwanggaet'o and the Statue of the Korean War. There are specific exhibition rooms such as the Korean Military Equipment Room, and also the Special Exhibit Room. On the walls of one of the corridors, the names of the soldiers that died in the Korean War are engraved. The Ministry of Communications is issuing this stamp to commemorate the opening of the Wae Memorial, a shrine of patriotism and national spirit, and a place for learning about war history. |
