Description
The Ministry of Communications has been issuing postage stamps entitled "Korean Beauty Series", which depict Korean lifestyles and some part of Korea's rich cultural heritage. This time traditional Korean fans are being chosen as the motives of the fourth collection.

The hand-held fan, moved slightly to produce a gentle cooling breeze, can be classified into two basic types: the round fan, made by pasting silk or paper over a circular framework, and the folding fan, made in such a way that it can be folded and unfurled freely.

TAEGUK (Yin-Yang)FAN.
This fan has a Taeguk design painted or pasted in the center. The fan featured in this coolection is divided into an X shape and has a red, blue and yellow painted Taeguk design at its center.

CRANE FAN.
The handle of this graceful fan is in the shape of a crane, and its leaf looks like a crane spreading its wings ready to fly, It is famous for its beautiful shape.

PEARL FAN.
This fan was used by queens and royal concubines during the Choson Dynasty. With it, the demure bride could conceal all of her face except for her eyes during the wedding ceremony. Initially this was an elaborate fan, embroidered and embellished with jewels, but gradually it has taken on a simpler shape and lost its decoration. The surviving Pearl Fans are decorated with brass.

WHEEL FAN.
This fan, made both in folding and rigid round varieties, has a circular shape like a wheel, hence its name. This fan was more often used as a sunshade than as a fan.
