Description
Slated to be completed on April 7, 1995 after an entire decade of construction work, "HANARO" will be Korea's first research reactor designed and built solely by Korean engineers using Korean technology. The reactor has been dubbed "HANARO", which is a purely Korean term meaning "the one and only". It reflects the country's resolve to achieve self-sufficiency in energy production and to prepare itself through development of nuclear energy for the anticipated increase in demand for energy in the post-unification era.

"HANARO" boasts a thermal output capacity of 30MW, placing it in a top-class performance category among the more than 320 research reactors around the world. Its excellent safty mechanisms and original design concept, which allows for a wide range of applications, also give the country much reason to be proud.

Intended for extensive use in scientific reserch, medical therapy, and in industry, HANARO is expected to serve as a catalyst in the peaceful use of nuclear energy. Not to mention the production of radiosotopes, which have wide industrial and medical applications, the reactor will also be valuable in the development of materials, inculding nucalear fuels, which will be needed by the nuclear power industry. The manufanture of high-purity is yet another area where the reactor gives great benefits.

The Ministry of Information and Communication has released a new commemorative stamp to celebrate the completion of the "HANARO" Research Reactor, which shows Korea's technological prowess to the world.
