| The 26th Olympics wil be held from July 20 to August 5, 1996, in Atlanta, the state capital of Georgia in the U.S. Georgia is a southern state of the U.S. and is bounded on thd east by the Atlantic Ocean.
Originating from the Olympic Games held at Olympia, site of one of the ancient Greek funeral ceremonies, the Olympic Games were revived throught the efforts of Baron Pierre de Coubertin of France. The '96' Games bears the special distinction of being the Centennial Olympis. The Olympic Games are a truly global festival for world peace and friendly competition in amateur sports where the youth of all countries of the world, including their different cultures and customs, are brought together to forge friendship and do their best to represent their countries in the true spirit of sportsmanship. The true meaning of the Olympic Games lies in the realization of the Olympic creed, "The most important aspect of the Olympic Games is not winning but taking part", and the Olympic ideal, "The essential part of life is not conquering but to fight well". In the upcoming Atlanta Olympics, athletes from a total of 197 member countries of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) will compete in 26 official sports for the 271 gold medals at stake and for the honor of their respective countries, as well as their own, under the Olympic motto of 'Citius, Fortius', which means "Swifter, Higher, Stronger". |
