| The FIFA (Federation Internationale de Football Association) executive committee decided to award Korea and Japan the right to co-host the 2002 World Cup final games at a meeting in Zurich, Swizerland on May 31, 1996. The World Cup will be the first of the 21st century and the first ever to be held in Asia. This decision came on the heels of the fierce bidding campaigns of the two neighboring contenders to stage the 2002 World Cup that received the widespread attention of the world population as well as those of both countries.
FIFA, the governing body of the World Cup championship series, was founded in 1904 by Frenchman Jules Rimet. The membership currently numbers 191 states. First held in Uruguay in 1930, the World Cup has been firmly established as the world's greatest single sports event in terms of scale, participation, and popularity. In addition to boosting Korea's international image, the co-hosting of the 2002 World Cup is expected to be a boon to the international exchanges of the country's sports and cutural activities as well as its regional and national development. The hosting of the prestigious event will also serve as an occasion to bring the world closer together and to further consolidate friendly ties between Korea and Japan. The Ministry of Information and Communication is celebrating the nation's co-hosting of the 2002 World Cup by issuing two commemorative stamps. |
